Claudio Segovia

Born in Buenos Aires, Claudio Segovia trained at the Manuel Belgrano School of Visual Arts, the Prilidiano Pueyrredón Academy and the Superior School Ernesto de la Cárcova.

For more than 15 years, he worked as a set and costume designer in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and then Madrid.

In 1966, he created a series of shows collaborating with well-known artists. His first show, Baguala, with Mercedes Sosa, toured internationally to great acclaim.

In 1974, he settled in Europe and in 1980, created Flamenco Puro which premiered at the Theatre Lope de Vega in Seville. He also inaugurated a series of ambitious shows inspired by popular cultures. Following the premiere of Tango Argentino at the Châtelet Theatre and then on Broadway, he re-worked his show Flamenco Puro in 1984 on the invitation of the Festival d´ Automne in Paris. The show toured to New York and became the first flamenco show to be performed in Broadway. The show was a huge success and brought the spirit of tango to the entire city. Flamenco Puro was awarded the Best Show of the Year prize and was nominated for three Tony Awards.

After a three-year tour in the United States, Tango Argentino premiered in Japan and came back to Europe, Germany, Austria and France. In 1991, he received a nomination for an Olivier Award after a critically acclaimed season in the West End in London.

In 1985, Claudio Segovia and his partner Héctor Orezzoli premiered their new show Black and Blue at the Châtelet Theatre, a musical revue with jazz, tap dance and blues. On Broadway, the show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, receiving three awards for Best Choreography, Best Performance for the singer Ruth Brown and Best Scenic and Costume Design for Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli. The show stayed on stage for two and a half years.

In 1995, Black and Blue toured internationally to Germany and Switzerland and then came back for a 6 week, sold-out season at the Châtelet Theatre, where it first premiered.

In the meantime, in February 1992, Claudio debuted his new musical Noche Tropical in Japan, Tokyo and Kobe, a spectacular show presented at the Budokan Stadium, bringing together over 100 amazing musicians, singers and dancers. Noche Tropical was critically acclaimed and crowned best show of the year!

Claudio has also directed several operas including Debussy´s Pelléas and Mélisande with Victoria de los Angeles (Zarzuela Theatre, Madrid), Janácek´s The Makropoulos Case (Colón Theatre, Buenos Aires), Campra´s Le Carnaval de Venise (international Festival of Lyric Art, Aix-en-Provence). One of his recent successes is the award-winning production Maipo Siempre Maipo, for which Claudio Segovia won the ACE Award for “Best Director” and which was honored with the title “Best Show” on the occasion of the 100th jubilee of the Maipo Theatre in Buenos Aires.
